Tomales Bay
One of the best things to do in Marin County is to go outside and enjoy the beautiful scenery, pretty easy to do right? One of the best places to do just that is at Tomales Bay. This has to be one of our most favorite spots to enjoy a weekend.
The bay is a perfect spot to enjoy a couple hours of kayaking, spot some wildlife and enjoy some local fisherman trying to reel in their catch of the day. Not only is Tomales Bay a great area to see some wildlife but it’s also the perfect location to enjoy some amazing fresh seafood.

Where can I rent a kayak?
Where to kayak?
You can launch your kayak right off Miller Boat Launch. There is a $5 parking fee, and you will find the kiosk near the bathrooms. Credit cards are accepted. This is the easiest loading and unloading area, with parking spots we recommend but you can find a couple small parking areas off the road. For a fuss free experience we recommened Miller Boat launch.
Their is no particular way you need to kayak but I do recommended heading to Hog and Duck Island to see the abundance of birds. You can see both these islands from Miller Boat Launch. Hopefully you will also get to see harbor seals poking their heads out of the water. If you’re lucky especially during the months of March through July you can see a large amount of harbor seals sunbathing. Please be respectful as harbor seals are extremely shy animals whose habitats are easily disrupted by human presence. Maintain at least a 90 meter (300 feet) distance from resting harbor seals.
Is Kayaking Tomales Bay Hard?
Winds can pick up in the bay, I would recommend checking to see the wind speed here, before heading out. High winds can make it difficult to navigate the water but it’s a nice calm ride otherwise.
Where to eat in Tomales?
I have 3 restaurants that we love to go to.
- The Marshal Store The best raw oysters! They have a great menu. Some of our favorites are bbq oysters, pulled pork and tri-tip sandwiches, ceviche tostadas, fish tacos and the clam chowder soup.
- Hog Island Oyster Company Reservations are now required for The Oyster Bar. Hog Island has the best views of the bay along with really great raw oysters and an AMAZING ceviche.
- Nick’s Cove Restaurant Try the Cast Iron Mac & Cheese, Lagunitas Battered Fish & Chips and Steamed Mussels & Clams.
